One of my favorite topics to talk about it entrepreneurship. I think its a valuable skill to have. Key to entrepreneurship is figuring out how you can provide value to other people. It may seam like an easy concept but in practice its very hard to do.
The reason I think its such an important skill is that it teaches you how to work towards a goal and deal with the bumps that come along the road. I think this is is one reason I identify with the G-HAMP idea. In a way entrepreneurship is about taking Humble Actions which in time lead to progress.
There is a saying that if you give a man a fish he won’t go hungry for a day. If you teach a man to fish he will never go Hungry. Thomas Friedman who wrote The World Is Flat and Hot, Flat, and Crowded
added to that saying with “Teach a man how to run a fishery and feed a village.” The point being local businesses are in many ways the life blood of a community.
As we try to figure out how to improve out surroundings and communities we should think about the impact that local businesses have. Its no secret that local businesses has a great impact on the local economy. With that in mind I have herd very little about organizations or initiatives to improve a local business community in areas that are not as well off.
The other day I met Kevin ( @KevenDones ) who is trying to start his site Labortopia. The goal of the site is to connect freelancers/businesses in a local community with the people around them. The site allows people to search for businesses in an area of Boston and filter those results by different aspects such as what languages they can speak.
I think this is a great idea. By making it easier for people to find the businesses around them they can support the local economy and in time, improve the community its self. I encourage you all to check out his site and to sign up. If your are not a freelancer but know someone who is pass it along. The site is off to a great start and I personally look forward to seeing more from them in the future.
If you are a community organizer or involved with your local business and interested and getting your businesses on the site contact me and I will connect you with Kevin.
