Persevering Through Struggle

Definition of persevere: To persist in or remain constant to a purpose, idea, or task in the face of obstacles or discouragement.

My favorite movie right now is the “Pursuit of Happyness”, based on the true story of Chris Gardner’s life. Watching this movie reminded me of average, hard working people trying to keep their head above water. A person I met from a previous employer I worked for was looking forward to moving into their new house. They got a raise and the purchase was made to move in their humble abode. Than all of a sudden lay-offs were made and that person become part of it. Not knowing how you’re gonna pay your bills to stay in your home can be very frightening.

The thought of becoming homeless, broke, out of a job, not having food to eat, can cause a person to do immeasurable things. Things that can damage their integrity, character, and overall person-hood. There was a sad, recent story in California where a person killed his whole family including himself because he couldn’t handle being laid-off from his job. These struggles are real and people battle them every day…but thank God we have the will to persevere.

Not only Chris Gardner, but countless others have persevered and overcome their obstacles. Lance Armstrong beat cancer and was able to win countless more pro-bicycle tournaments after. Anthony Robles (born with one leg) won the nationals in college wrestling competition. Jackie Robinson becoming the first African-American to join Major League Baseball at the time of segregation in America. Tyler Perry who was homeless before he hit it big in Hollywood.

No matter the obstacle, no matter the challenge. Know that you can persevere and be rewarded abundantly in your life. Not only will you succeed, but your mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual well being will become stronger.
